Where is Sungulwane Private Game Lodge located in KwaZulu-Natal?

Sungulwane Private Game Lodge is located on Zuka Private Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, within the Munyawana Conservancy – one of the largest private protected areas in Zululand.

Sungulwane is approximately a 3.5-hour drive from King Shaka Airport, Durban and around 2 hours from Richards Bay Airport. Road access is straightforward, with the final section inside the reserve requiring coordination with the lodge.

Sungulwane offers excellent year-round wildlife viewing. The dry winter months (May–September) provide superb game viewing, while the summer months (October–April) bring lush landscapes, migratory birds, and dramatic skies.

A minimum stay of two nights is recommended to fully enjoy the safari experience. Three or more nights allow for a more relaxed pace, varied sightings, and time to enjoy additional activities such as bush walks or the photographic hide.

How many guests does Sungulwane accommodate at one time?

Sungulwane accommodates a maximum of 20 guests across just 8 luxury suites, ensuring a peaceful, exclusive, and personalised safari experience.

The lodge offers six luxury suites and two family suites. All suites are air-conditioned, privately positioned, and feature indoor and outdoor showers with expansive bush views.

Sungulwane focuses on a personal, unstructured safari experience. With fewer guests, flexible schedules, and hands-on hosts, it offers a more intimate alternative to larger, more regimented lodges.

The lodge is unfenced, allowing wildlife to move naturally through the area. This enhances the feeling of immersion in the bush and provides authentic wildlife encounters close to camp.

Yes. Sungulwane welcomes families and offers dedicated family suites designed for comfort and privacy while sharing the safari experience together.

Are children allowed at Sungulwane Private Game Lodge?

Yes, children are welcome at Sungulwane, making it suitable for family safaris.

Children aged 0–2 stay free of charge. Children aged 3–12 are charged 50% of the adult rate.

Children aged 0–3 are not permitted on game drives and may remain at the lodge with child-minding available at an additional cost. Families travelling with children aged 4–6 require a private safari vehicle to participate in game drives.

What safari activities are included in a stay at Sungulwane?

Your stay includes two guided game drives per day in open safari vehicles led by experienced guides.

Guests enjoy one morning game drive and one afternoon game drive daily, timed to maximise wildlife viewing.

The reserve is home to the Big 5 – lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo – along with cheetah, giraffe, zebra, and a wide variety of plains game and birdlife.

Yes. Guided bush walks are available on request and offer a more immersive way to experience the reserve on foot, focusing on tracks, plants, insects, and smaller details often missed on game drives.

The photographic hide is a unique, ground-level hide overlooking a waterhole, offering eye-level wildlife encounters and exceptional photographic opportunities. It is suitable for photographers and non-photographers alike.

Rates include luxury accommodation, all meals, selected local drinks, two daily game drives, and Wi-Fi.

Rates, Bookings & Payments

How does the booking process work?

Official bookings can be submitted via our online booking system, or in writing with our reservations team.

Bookings are confirmed in writing once a non-refundable deposit of 20% has been received. The balance is payable 45 days prior to arrival.

Cancellation fees apply based on how close to arrival the booking is cancelled, ranging from 20% to 100% depending on timing.

Yes. Seasonal specials and long-stay offers may be available at certain times of the year. These are subject to availability and change.

Arrival, Transfers & Check-In

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in is from 13:00, with arrival by 15:00 recommended to participate in the afternoon game drive. Check-out is around 10:30.

Yes. Late arrivals impact reserve security procedures. A set fee applies for arrivals after 19:00, with additional charges after 21:00.

A high-clearance vehicle is recommended. The lodge will provide arrival instructions and coordinate access through the reserve gate.

Is Sungulwane suitable for wildlife photography?

Yes. The underground photographic hide, limited vehicle numbers at sightings, and flexible guiding make it excellent for photography.
