What Is It Really Like to Stay at Sungulwane?

Inside Our Family Suites

There is a moment on most safari holidays when the day stops being about ticking off sightings and starts being about the place itself. At Sungulwane, that moment usually happens back at the lodge, not out on the reserve. It might be the first glimpse of your suite as your transfer vehicle winds up through the Zululand bush. It might be sinking into an outdoor bath under an open sky. Or it might simply be the fire crackling at dusk while someone on the team asks how your afternoon drive went, because at Sungulwane, they actually want to know.

With only eight suites and a maximum of twenty guests at any one time, Sungulwane has been built around a simple idea: guests should feel like family, not like numbers on a booking sheet. Here is what that looks like in practice, and what you can expect from a stay in one of our Family Suites.

What makes a Sungulwane suite different from a standard safari room?

A Sungulwane suite is designed to feel like a private retreat rather than a hotel room. With only eight suites on the property, there is a natural sense of space and privacy, and the lodge’s intimate scale means it never feels crowded or impersonal. Inside, the design draws on natural materials such as timber and stone, with large glass doors that open onto the surrounding bush and bring the outdoors in.

The bathrooms are a highlight in their own right. Every suite has its own outdoor shower, offering the chance to wash off the dust of a game drive beneath the Zululand sky, while our two Family Suites also feature a freestanding outdoor bath. It’s these simple touches that make the experience feel so connected to the bush and are often the details guests remember most.

What is included in the Family Suite at Sungulwane?

Sungulwane has two Family Suites, designed for exactly what the name suggests: parents and children travelling together without anyone feeling squeezed in. Each Family Suite has a main bedroom with a king bed and a separate, air-conditioned twin bedroom for the children, with both bedrooms sharing a spacious bathroom. It is a simple but thoughtful layout that gives everyone their own space to settle into while keeping the family comfortably close together.

As a small, family-owned lodge, we understand that every family has its own rhythm. From flexible mealtimes to activities that suit different ages and energy levels, our team takes the time to get to know each family and make the experience as relaxed and enjoyable as possible. It’s about finding the right balance between experiencing the safari and simply enjoying time together.

Is Sungulwane just about the game drives?

No, and this is often what surprises first-time guests most. The lodge experience at Sungulwane is built to be as much a part of the holiday as the wildlife itself.

Evenings tend to gather around the fire pit, where guests who arrived as strangers that morning are often swapping sighting stories by dinner. Meals are relaxed and personal rather than formal, served either in the boma, around the fire, or in the main lodge, with the team getting to know your preferences quickly given how few guests are ever on site at once. There is a pool for the heat of the day, comfortable lounge areas, and quiet corners throughout the lodge for reading or simply doing nothing at all, which on a busy itinerary is sometimes exactly what is needed.

What makes the Sungulwane team different?

At Sungulwane, it’s the people who make the experience feel personal. Keenan, Sam and the team are involved in the day-to-day guest experience. Alongside them are our chefs Hlengiwe and Ray, Butler Simphiwe, and our housekeeping team of Nelly, Nonto and Xolani, and Mpilo and Siya, who keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

With only eight suites and a maximum of twenty guests, our team has the time to get to know you rather than simply look after a room number. They learn how you like your coffee, what you enjoyed on your game drive, whether you prefer a quiet morning or a little more time around the fire. It’s those small, genuine interactions that make the difference.

We don’t want our guests to feel like they are being processed through a safari experience. We want them to feel welcomed, looked after and, by the time they leave, to know the people who helped make their stay special. That personal connection is a big part of what makes the Sungulwane team different.

Planning a family stay at Sungulwane

If you’re considering a family safari, our Family Suites offer a comfortable and relaxed space for parents and children to enjoy the experience together, while still having room to settle into your own space. Spend the day exploring the bush, cool off in the pool or enjoy an outdoor bath before gathering around the fire in the evening to share stories from the day.

With a small team who take the time to get to know you and a lodge that feels personal from the moment you arrive, a family stay at Sungulwane is about more than seeing the wildlife. It’s about slowing down, spending time together and enjoying the simple moments that make a safari special.

Does a stay at Sungulwane include more than just game drives?
Absolutely. While the game drives are a highlight, there is plenty of time to simply enjoy being at Sungulwane. Between drives, you can cool off in the pool, relax on your private veranda, spend some quiet time in our hide overlooking the waterhole, or enjoy an in-room spa treatment. There is also time to settle into the lounge with a good book or simply take in the views across the bush.

As the day winds down, the fire comes to life and guests gather for a drink, dinner and stories from the day, with meals enjoyed in the main lodge, boma or around the fire depending on the occasion. It’s all part of the Sungulwane experience – a safari that gives you time to explore, relax and enjoy the bush at your own pace.

Who owns Sungulwane, and why does that matter for guests?
Sungulwane is a family-owned lodge, and that sense of family is reflected in the way we welcome and look after our guests. Our small team takes the time to get to know the people staying with us, from remembering how you like your morning coffee to sharing stories around the fire after a game drive.

With a maximum of twenty guests, we’re able to offer a more personal experience where you are known by name rather than simply being another guest. We hope that by the time you leave, you’ll feel that you’ve made connections with the people who looked after you and that coming back to Sungulwane feels a little like coming home.
