Walking in the Wild

3-Night Primitive Trail ยท 2027

Wild Adventure,
Refined Comfort

Out in the bush, with nothing but the sounds of the night, a crackling fire and a bed under the stars. Walking in the Wild pairs two nights of lodge comfort at Sungulwane with one unforgettable night sleeping out in the wilderness.

What is the Walking in the Wild Trail?

Walking in the Wild is a 3-night guided group package at Sungulwane Private Game Lodge in Zuka Private Game Reserve, Zululand. Guests spend two nights at the lodge and one night at a remote wilderness camp, reached on a 3 to 4 hour guided walk. It runs from 1 April to 30 September 2027 for groups of 4 to 8 guests, from R32,895 per person sharing, or R49,340 per person for a single.

Itinerary

Four days that move from lodge to wilderness and back again, at the unhurried pace of the bush.

Day 1

At the lodge

Arrive and settle in

Arrive at Sungulwane to a welcome with refreshments, then settle into your suite. Take the afternoon to unwind before an afternoon game drive in search of wildlife and a Zululand sunset. Return to the lodge for a beautifully prepared dinner and a quiet evening.

Day 2

Into the wild

Walk to the wilderness camp

Begin with an early morning game drive and breakfast, then a leisurely morning and lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, set out on foot with a professional trails guide for a 3 to 4 hour walk, tracking wildlife and discovering the bush from ground level. Arrive at the remote camp in the late afternoon to the glow of the campfire. Chefs have prepared a traditional fire-cooked feast in advance, inspired by local flavours, and you spend the night beneath the stars.

Day 3

Back to the lodge

Walk back and unwind

Wake to freshly brewed coffee and light refreshments around the fire, then walk back to the lodge in time for lunch. Spend the afternoon at leisure, with lodge facilities and wellness treatments on hand. An evening game drive is followed by a celebratory farewell dinner.

Day 4

Departure

One last sunrise

A final early wake-up call for a sunrise game drive and one more chance to see the bush come alive. Return to the lodge for breakfast before departure.

Into the Wild

Leave the vehicle behind and step into the bush the way it was always meant to be seen. On foot, the small things come forward: a fresh track, the alarm call of a francolin, the scent of wild sage underfoot.

Your professional trails guide reads every sign as you walk, turning the 3 to 4 hour trail into a lesson in tracking, birds, plants and the quiet language of the bush.

Around the Fire

The wilderness camp is set deep in the reserve. You arrive to a crackling fire and a traditional feast, thoughtfully prepared in advance by our lodge chef and inspired by local flavours. Then come the stories, as the sun goes down and the bush changes its voice.

This is where Sungulwane’s family spirit travels with you. Guests often tell us they arrived as guests and left as family, and a night around the fire is where that happens fastest.

A Bed Under the Stars

Far from the glow of city lights, the Zululand sky opens up. Settle into your stretcher bed and bivvy bag and watch the stars wheel overhead while the night chorus of the bush plays out around you.

As part of this authentic wilderness experience, guests take turns joining the guides on traditional night watch, sharing in the responsibility of keeping watch over camp as the bush comes alive after dark. Then wake to the sounds of Africa, with coffee already brewing on the fire.

Who Can Join

Walking in the Wild is a genuine walking experience, so a few simple requirements keep every guest safe and comfortable. Guests aged 16 and older are welcome, with no upper age limit, as long as they can walk comfortably for long stretches over uneven ground. We recommend guests over 65 check with their doctor before booking this trail.

Safety First

Every guest completes an indemnity and medical questionnaire before the trail, and Sungulwane may ask for a medical fitness certificate where needed. If heavy rain or unsafe conditions set in, your guide may delay, adjust or cancel the walk. Your lodge room stays available throughout, and we will offer an alternative safari activity wherever possible.
